The idea of national pride has always confused me. Judging the entire population of a country under one opinion seems an overly simplistic view, especially when huge parts of countries themselves can have such differing cultural and political viewpoints.
The North East of England is not the most glamorous location, it doesn't have the reasonably good weather of the South West, the Capital City of the South East, the musical and footballing history of the North West, or the Balti Curry of the Midlands. All of this, however, leads me to feel more proud of, more loyal to the region. Demonstrating pride is something quite difficult to do, aside from getting a huge tattoo of the Angel of the North across my stomach, I struggle to comprehend a feasible way to show how much I care for the place. Aside from one. Football, specifically Newcastle United Football Club, is a way in which I can join local people, or at least those who’ve made an effort to travel, and really attempt to celebrate a feeling I struggle to put into words.
